Planning a New Rug
Planning a New Rug
It’s time to think ahead to the last area of the Atlas Mountains. To the right, you can see the rug I’m going to adapt from the High Atlas. The color scheme is browns with black, white, yellow, and yellow/orange. And there is a touch of green also.
I’ve saved this area for last because the designs are more complicated and I wanted lots of practice with the motifs before I had to put them into this more stylized type of rug.
I’ve been playing with different threads to use for this project. I’ve sent for several skeins of Trio from Brown Paper Packages to see if will work for the project. I used Silk & Ivory for the Middle Atlas rug and really enjoyed stitching with it. The Trio is strandable so it would work well on 18 ct. canvas. I’m thinking that the colors shown below would work well for this rug.

Another thread I’m playing with is Splendor by Rainbow Gallery.
Each rug that I’ve worked on has used different threads and different stitches. This one would use different threads and stitches as well. One thing I would like to accomplish with this rug is to make it look more like a woven rug. So I played a little with Horizontal Brick Stitch. This is done over two threads and really looks like a woven rug. I’m not sure I want to do that for the entire rug, so more playing is needed.
I’m planning on a rug that is about 14” x 21” ( a little smaller than the blue rug, but not much) on 18 count canvas.
This is the rug I adapted from the High Atlas region of Morocco.
